Project Overview

The Product

This application aims to reward those employees who practice some physical exercise or sport with recognition points based on the number of calories burned or distance traveled. These points will be sent to the NBCUniversal THX app, where they can be shared or used as a reward.

The Goal

Sport is a great tool that brings essential benefits to those who practice it. For this reason, the main goal of this application is to promote to employees a healthy lifestyle, encouraging and rewarding when they are practicing a sport, individually or in groups.

Responsabilities

Plan and conduct user research. Interpret data and qualitive feedback. Create user stories, personas, and storyboards. Determine information architecture and create sitemaps. Create wireframes HI-FI and prototypes. Conduct usability testing.

Understanding the User

Summary

I interviewed six people from the NBC-Telemundo station group. These potential users are between the ages of 20 - 52. These users would like to be rewarded or motivated by the company to exercise. The information collected took three weeks to understand the possible incentives based on their needs.

Starting Design

Paper Wireframe

After gathering the information and making the app map, it was time to focus on the experience itself by developing the paper wireframes. The main objective was to test some options for the community experience in this phase.

Digital Wireframe

This digital wireframe was worked several times before come to this because I was always considering new features, new paths, new categories that could turn the user experience more pleasant as well as comply with the problem statement.

Usability Study

I conducted usability tests on five (5) people for two rounds of testing to evaluate the ease with which users could navigate through the tasks and identify any barriers that might prevent users from completing tasks associated with the user flow.

Round 1 findings
1

Participants needed a few seconds before starting the exercise.

2

Participants are confused about how to go to select music provider.

3

Participants are confused about how to redeem points.

Round 2 findings
1

Participants feel content they can track their activities on mobile and web.

2

Participants are happy they can share or earn points.

3

Participants require more activities or exercises in the menu.

Defining the Design

Mockups

I maintained consistency throughout the app screens so that the users wouldn't have to wonder whether different words, situations, or actions mean the same thing. The design eliminates error-prone conditions and presents users with a simple navigation option. The web and mobile apps can cater to both inexperienced and experienced users without having to worry about any complex situations or too many functions happening simultaneously.

Usability Considerations

1

Skill Levels

Partisipants inquired about setting skill level during the account set up page.

2

Language

It is a crucial factor in reducing bounce rate and achieving customer satisfaction.

3

Elements

Kept the design clutter-free by keeping only necessary and relevant elements.

Going Forward

Impact

Users found this application to be very motivating, not only to earn points, but also to promote exercise and maintain good health. Along with this, participants see this app as a way to maintain goals.

Quote from one of the research participants: "IF BY DOING EXERCISES I AM AWARDED WITH POINTS, I WILL DOUBLE THE HOURS OF TRAINING, FOR SURE."

What I Learned

Small changes in design can make a huge impact on the whole user experience. I realised that there's nothing like too many iterations because the more you iterate the more chances of the best solution. I came across some micro-challenges, which made the whole project even more interesting. I learned how to resolve those challenges without compromising on the major design solution.

Next Steps

It is a project for a certification program, where I have learned a lot. However, I will pitch this idea to NBCUniversal corporate to develop this app. If I'm allowed to work on this project, I would:

1

Conduct another round of usability studies to determine if the current solution effectively addresses user pain points.

2

Develop the app in different language. It is a crucial factor in reducing bounce rate and achieving customer satisfaction.

3

Implement the application for smart watches.

Thank you.
